Provide for future generations

The Endowment Foundation is the endowment and planned giving division of UJA NNJ and serves the Jewish community of northern New Jersey.

With assets under management of approximately $42 million (as of June 30, 2009), the Endowment Foundation's mission is to secure and manage sources of future funding for UJA NNJ and its Annual Campaign, for institutions and programs serving the northern New Jersey area, and for the needs of the Jewish people in Israel and throughout the world.

The Endowment Foundation offers donor advised fund and supporting foundation programs for philanthropic individuals and families in our community -- and millions of dollars are distributed to charitable organizations selected and recommended by the fund holders annually.

The Endowment Foundation has numerous funds established to benefit specific causes or areas of interest; serves as trustee for charitable lead and remainder trusts; and is licensed to sell charitable gift annuities.  The Endowment Foundation also manages the endowment assets of many of the agencies and organizations serving our community.

The Endowment Foundation created the Dor L’Dor Society to recognize those members of our community who have made substantial endowment commitments to support UJA NNJ’s Annual Campaign.  Dor L’Dor commitments may be used to establish a Perpetual Annual Campaign Endowment (PACE) or a Lion of Judah Endowment (LOJE).  As of June 30, 2009, the Dor L’Dor Society includes more than 120 individuals and families with endowment commitments totaling over $33 million.

Individuals in our community who have made a minimum commitment of $5,000 to UJA NNJ in their estate plans are invited to share their personal stories and hopes for the future in our Book of Life.

Dor L'Dor Society
Those making unrestricted Endowment Foundation commitments of $100,000 or more become members of the Dor L'Dor (Generation to Generation) Society. Dor L'Dor Society membership allows the dreamers of today to plant the seeds for the Jewish community of tomorrow by ensuring a strong, financially secure future. The Society has three giving levels:

  • Builders, $100,000 or more
  • Benefactors, $500,000 or more
  • Guardians, $1 million or more

Perpetual Annual Campaign Endowment (PACE)
The Perpetual Annual Campaign Endowment program provides donors with the opportunity to give, either during their lifetime or at death, a sum of money or assets which are invested. The income from these investments guarantees the donor's pledge, in perpetuity, to the annual UJA Federation of Northern New Jersey Campaign.

Lion of Judah Endowment
Lion of Judah Endowment (“LOJE”) is the endowment component of the national Lion of Judah major gifts program. You can create a LOJE by making a one-time gift of $100,000 or more to the UJA NNJ Endowment Foundation. We will establish an endowment fund in your name to perpetuate your Lion of Judah Annual Campaign gift. In this way, your legacy and generosity will be an integral part of our community, remembered and recognized in perpetuity. learn more

Restricted Funds
You may create a personalized special purpose fund within the Endowment Foundation through two distinct funds. In the first, you establish the fund by designating a field of interest, such as Jewish education or services to the elderly, and the income and/or principal of the fund is dedicated to the cause you name. In the second, you designate the use of the fund's income and/or principal to specific programs or beneficiary agencies.

Supporting Foundations
For families who desire that successive generations play a role in Jewish philanthropy, a supporting foundation offers the flexibility and tax benefits of a public charity. A supporting foundation named for your family can continue to make charitable distributions to a wide range of interests in perpetuity.

Donor Advised Funds
This fund may bear your name or the name of anyone you wish to honor or memorialize. You establish the fund by contributing cash or property to UJA Federation. In contrast to a private foundation, the philanthropic funds may be created simply by completing a two-page form. You may recommend charitable distributions from this fund at any time. Grant requests are reviewed and paid twice each month.

Gifts During Your Lifetime
You can establish an endowment during your lifetime by making a gift of cash, appreciated securities, zero coupon bonds, or a paid-up life insurance policy.

Testamentary Gifts
Gifts through bequests offer many ways to give to the Endowment Foundation. Endowments can be established through bequests of a specific dollar amount, percentage of an estate, or a portion of the residuary of an estate.

Life Income Plans
Charitable Remainder Trusts and Charitable Gift Annuities offer tremendous benefits, allowing donors to contribute assets and receive annual income payments for themselves or others. After the death of the last income beneficiary, the principal of a Charitable Remainder Trust or an Annuity goes to the Endowment Foundation. There are significant income tax benefits as well.

Charitable Gift Annuities
Charitable Gift Annuities provide a win-win opportunity for older individuals seeking to increase their annual income while leaving a legacy through UJA Federation of  Northern New Jersey. In exchange for a one-time payment of cash or appreciated securities, UJA Federation of  Northern  New Jersey will pay a fixed annuity for the life of the donor and/or his/her spouse. Annuity rates are set by the American Council on Gift Annuities and are very attractive for individuals 65 years and older. Charitable Gift Annunities  offer donors excellent income tax benefits, increased income, fixed and reliable income, possible estate tax savings, security, simplicity, while benefitting the Jewish community as well. Charitable Lead Trusts
Charitable Lead Trusts are often used by families when transferring assets to future generations. These Trusts work in the following way: The individual contributes assets to a Trust. Annual income payments are made every year for a predetermined period of time from the Trust to UJA Federation of  Northern  New Jersey. At the end of the term of the Trust, the assets pass back to the donor's family or the donor, generally with reduced gift and estate taxes.
